Spain is a large country in southwestern Europe. After the unification of the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and the defeat of the Moors, Spain became a dominant player in Renaissance Europe and a major colonial presence in North and South America. However, Spain's relative dominance declined due to multiple European conflicts. Modern Spain then went through a violent Civil War from 1936 to 1939 in which Franco emerged as the leader of a fascist Spain until his death in 1975. After Franco's death, Spain enjoyed a peaceful transition to democracy and emerged as bastion of individual freedom and economic growth. Spain is the home of a rich and unique culture that incorporates Roman, Muslim, European elements.
